TUTORIAL FOR CUTE LITTLE COTTON TEES

My friend asked me to do a tutorial on how to embellish a T-shirt.

I make these for my granddaughters to wear with little cotton skirts that I make them. They are fast and easy to make, takes maybe 30-40 minutes unless you want to add more fancy things. This one is a size girl 16 or XL for a 11-13 year old.

  1. Buy a tee. At Wal-mart or Target they are about $5.

  2. Any kind of flimsy material that will wash okay will work. I only takes a little bit, maybe 6 inches of the total length of the material (selvage to selvage.)

3. Fold it accordion style so you have about 4 to 5 inches in width 4. Use a cup or something for a pattern to draw a circle. Pin together through all layers so you can cut them out all together. Make sure you discard the top piece that has the pen marks on, or just cut around the markings. Cut out as many circles as you want.

5. Use a piece of netting, if you can find color the same color as the SHIRT it is best. You are going to hand sew the circles to the netting, and sew the netting to the shirt.

6. You will be folding each circle in half
7. Pin the folded circles to the netting and pin in place. Make sure you start from the bottom of your design and work up to the top of your design so the circles will flop on the top. You don't want them tucked under each other.
8. When you are finished with your design, place it on your shirt to make sure it is correct. Remember, the curve of the circles needs to be pointing down when it is being worn.
9. Now you are going to flip it over and hand sew the circles to the back of the netting. You are just going to tack it with one knot to the center of the circle. Make sure you won't be able to see the stitching from the front.

10. I make a knot in each one
11. When you are done, it will look like this from the back
12, it will look like this from the front. The stitches won't show through.
12. Pin the netting to the tee with the placement you have chosen. Using a "Knit" stitch on your machine, (very important, otherwise the embellishment will easily tear when the child pulls it over her head) sew the netting to the shirt. Carefully lift up the circles so the stitching is underneath the circles and invisible while wearing the shirt. *(Knit stitches can be done with a tiny zig zag if your machine doesn't have one programed for you).
13. trim away the netting close to your stitching
14. If a little bit of the netting is visable, it won't matter too much. Your project is done!
Now make a little knit skirt to wear with it!
Try different fabrics to see what you like
Why did I take this upside down? My camera is left handed i guess.
